THE ENGLISH

LONG-FACED TUMBLER

Peter Leijten from Oss tells us about his favourite breed, the English Long-Faced Tumbler. The thing that attracted him most, when he first saw the Long-Faced Tumblers, was the overall type, nice deep stance, slightly backwards arched neck and great head shape that appeared around on all sides.

BEARDED POLANDS

OR PADUANS

rare, but very attractive

In the former issue of Aviculture Europe (December 2014) I wrote about the non-bearded Polands, which I called ‘Crested Dutch’. This time I will write on the bearded Polands which I will call ‘Paduans’. The Paduan is a special bird, docile and gentle by character. Only the crest and beard require some special attention. A breed that could use many more breeders.

THE BASSETTE

Vitality, precociousness, not demanding much, numerous eggs, excellent egg layers in winter, attractive colours; these have been the qualifications of the Bassettes for more than a century already. Everybody who keeps Bassettes will surely confirm this.

KEEPING

MUSCOVY DUCKS

The domesticated Muscovy Ducks have become much heavier than their wild ancester and especially have lost much of their ability to fly. The ducks have retained their preference to nest in holes and cavities, and each offered nesting that imitates such a space, is happily used.

THE DUTCH OWLBEARD

The Dutch Owlbeard is a genuine historical chicken with a modern appearance. The breed consist in many colours, so a choice might be difficult. But if you are looking for something special you might consider to choose this breed.
