FRILLBACK PIGEONS IN

REICHENSCHWAND

Germany

After several years not to have been given the opportunity, I left on Thurs-day, January 12 for this very special show; a ride of over 600 km ... not my favourite business, but it was fully worth it. 450 Frillback Pigeons had been entered. And my, were they beautiful! How about 17 times awarded with the maximum of 97 points!

My Sumatra bantams

Sumatra bantams need time to mature and develop their full size and plumage. This holds for both males and females. In the case of the males, particularly, it takes a long time before they show their full glory. Only after the moult in their second year can they be judged for their qualities. I think that is the main reason why you only see these beautiful chickens seldom at the shows.

WILD PIGEONS

IN THE NETHERLANDS

AND BELGIUM

In our country there are 5 different pigeon species: the Rock Pigeon, the Common Wood Pigeon, the Stock Pigeon, the Eurasian Collared Dove and the Turtle Dove. These species are nice to keep and interesting to breed. Personally I breed all five of the mentioned species and in this article I would like to share my breeding expe-riences with you.

CONCERNING POULTRY

~ feeding your chickens :

berries ~

I like to feed my chickens herbs and vegetables, as well as and berries and nuts. The greater the variety, the better, so I am always looking for something extra. During the second half of the year, especially berries and hips can be collected anywhere for free. Most of these berries contain carotene and lots of vitamins.

THE GHENT CROPPER

a wilful and active pigeon

Seeing a Ghent Cropper at exhibitions, in free flight or simply in the loft is a joy to watch. Few breeds combine so many characteristics into one single pigeon. Apart from their large globe, the Ghent Croppers also should impress you with their beautiful type, stance and their beautiful range of colours and mar-kings. They make the Ghent cropper a true gem to have in the loft.

THE OLDEST HATCHERIES

ARE STILL IN USE

In present-day poultry books we are still reading a statement according to which the oldest method known for artificial breeding was an invention of the Egyptians. Nobody knew the details of this procedure, but Artificial incubation was a desideratum in many countries. Many ages have passed by and today we have perfect incubators, but lately we heard that these traditional hatcheries in Egypt are still in use!

CHICKENS in all types

and sizes IN GHANA

A journey impression

This photo report gives a broad view of 'the chicken' in general. Chicken as part of the Ghanaian meal, the chicken in the art, the chicken as utility. Wherever you are in Ghana, on the ferry, in the tannery, in the city, suburb, rural… chickens are everywhere.

THE DOCTOR’S WIFE

Since the turn of the 19th century, the Khaki Campbell Duck has been renowned for its phenomenal production of large, white-shelled eggs; a period of 111 years to the present day, and yet sur-prisingly little has been known about the back-ground to either Mrs. A. Campbell or her creations, the Campbell and the Khaki Campbell Ducks.
