cauchois show

This is the experience of a pigeon fancier, visiting the Champagne region in France, where in the village of Châlons en Champagne, a European Breed Show plus the French National Championship for Cauchois was organized. At the same Show also the National Championship Show for the Strasser and the Texan was hold.

BUTTERCUP BREEDS

American, English and Dutch breeders might be familiar with the Sicilian Buttercup. A rare breed, but it can be seen occasionally at shows. However, this is not the same breed as the Italian chicken breed ‘Siciliana from the isle of Sicily. Moreover, there are a few other buttercup varieties in the world, a fact which actually leads to confusion.

Lasne Crested

bantam and the (fake)

Augsburger buttercup

Jacques Hanotier was the creator of this strange fowl which combines striking traits, as far as appearance is concerned, while being in the same time a good layer.  The Lasne crested bantam was named after the city of Lasne in Walonian Brabant (South of Belgium) where Jacques and his wife lived. It had to be a chicken with the qualities of a Fauvist in the art of living and completing the list of other Walonian breeds.

Pigeon Fanciers Lung

Fancy that happening ! You have to stop the hobby due to an allergy . . . In this article I restrict myself to the pigeon fancier who just heard from his doctor (and probably also advised by a specialist) that he has to stop keeping pigeons or even getting close to pigeons. When this prohibition is issued after so many years of keeping pigeons, of course this will come as a great disappointment.

THE PIGEONS OF THE BATAVIANS

Elio Corti, one of our Team of Editors, translated another part of the Aldrovandi book for us. A chance to read what Aldrovandi exactly did write, and this time it is about pigeons, to be more specific: the pigeons kept by the Batavians. “They report that French people, but above all the Belgians, and among them the Batavians, are passionately fond of the pigeons to such an extent that at least a fourth of them raises them only to satisfy his own mind.”

CHICKEN RUN

BREDA FOWL AT

henk Lubbers

At the European Show in Wels, Austria in 2000, I promised Henk Lubbers I’d come over for an interview. It took over 10 years before I went to visit him in his hometown of Aalten, near the German border, but by then he had stopped breeding the Breda Fowl.

But the Park is above all an extraordinary and specialized zoological institution without a match. As a warm up for the coming breeding season we have a few news and high-lights from the previous season that has not yet been published.

CONCERNING POULTRY

- PHYTOTHERAPY -

We very pleased to receive from the Philippine vet Dr. Leila Flores, a clear and extensive list of herbs used in poultry, including their preparation and application.  However, a number of the mentioned plants probably are not at hand in European countries. So if you live in the Northern hemisphere we advise you to also check the compatible list of herbs that is published in our Dutch issue.

SEXING CHICKS

Commercial hatcheries use a variety of tricks that allow them to determine the sex of every chick from the moment it hatches. This is mostly done by means of cross breeding and thus completely useless to us, being serious breeders of pure breeds. However, we listed a number of tips that can be of help.
