Long Faced Tumblers

- INTRODUCTION -

For a large part, all Long Faced Tumblers share the same history. Keeping this in mind when reading their breed descriptions, will give you a better understanding of their characteristics. They don’t just share a lot of positive breed characteristics, but also several negative ones. We will explain further in this article.

ARAUCANAS

I did not start raising Araucanas in spite of their unique breeding challenges, but BECAUSE of them.  I did my research carefully before settling on the Araucana as my bird of choice: arguably, the most difficult breed to perfect. The Araucana is a challenge to even the most experienced poultry people for several reasons.

THE POND

It is a very beautiful pond though. Clear, gently streaming water. Surrounded with vegetation that makes all visitors wax lyrical. You would think there is nothing wrong with it. But there is. There is no life in and around the pond. Every once in a while a little moorhen comes and has a look, but very soon it is gone again. A pond without waterfowl is like a glass of beer without a head, thus spoke the owner tersely.

A visit at

GERARD ADRIAANSE

in Middelburg

Our visit took place on Saturday 14 November and I truly believe there is always a stormy wind blowing in this province. But that also provides relatively many sunshine hours for the inhabitants, because of this wind, the clouded sky is soon blown over and clear again, proved by this rainbow which you can see here above. We were lucky, as according to Gerard the day before it had rained all day long. Come rain or shine you are always welcome here in the province of Sealand.

Chicken run

Ron Kerkhof and

his Silkies

After 25 years breeding Silkies - with many ups and downs - Ron Kerkhof is once again one of the top breeders in the Netherlands. Ron is living in the little village of Koudekerke, in the Province of Zealand, close to the North Sea coast. The Silkie is Ron’s favourite breed, especially the bearded variety.

German Long FaceD

Tumbler

The German Long Faced Tumbler is closely related to the English Magpie. Not because of recent crossings, no, they both spring from the same roots. This is most easily seen in the Magpied variety, although the German birds are noticeably smaller more slender and elegant in built. The pure flying capability of the Breed is now nonexistent, however the Modern birds still show strength and speed in their outward appearance.

CONCERNING POULTRY

- DIVERSITY -

In large parts of the world, the diversity of fowl does not just exist thanks to standard lists, priorities chosen by judges, show and poultry magazines, but simply because of the care and preferences of farmers and countrywomen. The reason that there is so much attention for breeds from Europe, United States and Japan has more to do with better documentation and poultry press articles than the fact that other parts of the world would lack diversity.

AUSTRALIAN

EXPERIENCE

I would like to start by thanking everyone involved with the Pigeon Fanciers Society of NSW, who made my first ever trip to Australia as enjoyable as anyone could ever imagine. My girlfriend Elaine and I found Sydney and Australia an awesome place with very impressive surroundings with plenty of things to see and do. We stayed on the “Rocks” between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera house, what a setting !

german Pekin

The Pekin is undoubtedly one of the most gregarious and affectionate of all the domestic ducks. In the USA some breeders call it Donald Duck. This was because Walt Disney developed the qualities of this cartoon character from the German Pekin duck’s behaviour when he invented his famous Donald Duck stories.

ARAUCANA

- past and present -

No breed special is complete with the history of the breed. But what could we possibly tell you about the history of this breed? Even now, scientists are still searching for the missing links. As for as we know now, we can state that thanks to linguistic and etymological data we know chickens were already present in South America before the arrival of Columbus, but where did they came from, or are they original South American species, same as the turkey and Muscovy duck ?

CHICKENS FED WITH

HEMP AND NETTLE

SEEDS LAY MORE EGGS

IN WINTER

Until now we have been able to individualize six Renaissance authors as guarantors of the fact that hemp seeds have a positive effect on the number of eggs laid by the hens. If we believe in these affirmations it is time to put them into practice.
