THE STARLINGS OF

rOBERT HOORNSTRA

We must confess that the main aim of our visit to Robert was to see his Kraien-köppe bantams (see our June issue). His Starling Pigeons at this moment are the Big Winners in the National shows, so we decided to pay some attention to these birds as well.

ARDENNER bantams

This breed special – written by Jan Bollen, one of the few Belgian breeders of this rare Belgian bantam breed - starts with the words : The way a real chicken behaves. Jan mainly describes how he keeps his Ardenner bantams and how they come up to his expectations. The article is completed with the breed’s history.

THE SCANDAROON

PART 2

Following on the report on our visit to Kees Verkolf and Marleen Brouwer - see the August issue - we now present you a breed special on the Scandaroon, one of the eldest pigeon breeds. In conclusion we compare the nowadays breed standard with the (old) original German standard of the Scandaroon.

CHICKEN RUN

Today we are visiting Henk van Dijk in IJsselstein (NL), better known as: ‘Uncle Henk from the Table with (alive) pet animals’. Henk is 77 years young and an always dedicated  promoter of our beautiful Hobby. However, only a few will know that he is also a very skilled breeder of the Rosecomb bantam. So let’s put this side of Henk in the spotlight.

CONCERNING POULTRY

LEGS- part 1

Legs don’t come first when describing a chicken. Still they are important, as they have to support the body. They vary with the looks of the bird : set well apart in broad birds; over long and slender in Modern English Game bantams; typically short in Chabo, or feathered all over in Cochins. Apart from the size, also the color varies: from pale white to deep black.  In this article we will discuss the color of the legs.

Where is René Delin’s

Painting “Ghent

Cropper”?

Under this title, the well-known publicist R.R.P. van der Mark placed a recall in the magazine Avicultura of August 1978 to find the Ghent Croppers painting, of which you see an image here. It is not ‘just another painting’; it concerned Ghent Croppers in the five known varieties, painted by René Delin in 1927. The paining remained however missing, until the end of 2008, thirty years after the search operation had started.

DELIN

In 2005, at the European Frill days in Houthalen (Belgium) I showed a powerpoint presentation of René Delin’s paintings concerning the Frill pigeons. The original work is almost all in the hands of Juul Lauwers from Mechelen. I hope the readers of this splendid magazine will enjoy my presentation too.

THE ORIGIN OF DUNS

In November 2002 I visited the national poultry show in Columbus, Ohio. During this show I got acquainted with a new color : White Crested Khaki Poland bantams, in extremely good quality. I also met Al Westling, the originator of this color.

SWEDISH POULTRY

IN THE NETHERLANDS

It’s well-known that the Dutch Poultry Society has friendly ties with foreign associations resulting in a very interesting cooperation. For example, this spring we received a variety of Swedish poultry eggs; a very special gift indeed.
